Why Do People Persist To "accuse" One Suffering Of COPD ?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Even my relatives like my brother answered me recently, when I told him I'm having real difficulties to breath in my daily tasks: "But, you did all you could (smoke) to get there!".
Instead, of being supportive and actively helping!
Do something! Help him! Chronic diseases is very tough, and we're very frail physically and extremely sensitive emotionally!
😭😡

@Dominique02… Yes we did this to ourselves BUT there was no info on cigarette smoking years ago! We could even smoke in the hospitals after giving birth!(needed one after tht lol).. people / family need to sweep their own door step before they sweep yours/ours. I have not heard any negative from my family etc, if I do I will surely speak my mind! But there is only one perfect person in this world and that is our LORD. What goes around will come around! Big hug to you❤️

I have two sisters who haven't SAID anything but you know what they are thinking. They don't even realize how tough life can be sometimes even for me who has just moderate emphysema. They expect you to be doing the same things (usually for them) that you've always done. One of my sisters has a daughter with COPD too and she is looking down on that daughter and probably thinking the same thing your brother is saying. I also have a daughter with COPD and another one who does not. The one who does not is VERY supportive of both myself and her sister fortunately. I am sorry you have to deal with this @DominiqueRegout; it is very difficult and lonely sometimes. Thank goodness for this site!!!! Chris January 3, 2025

Im a pretty much of the opinion that one paddles their own canoe, one thing I don't want is sympathy from someone that doesn't have a clue, they always find a way to put you down whether on purpose or not. And it always comes off in my experience as a pitty pot of sorts. Course I'm not shy about telling someone "theres the door" either and theres been a few times where I just told whomever I've had enough and left. But I live by the golden rule. That you do me wrong the first time thats shame on you, you do it on me again then thats shame on me, you don't get a third wack at me our previous connection is severed and I will be civil to you and no more and much to the dismay of a couple of my relatives who learned the hard way I won't back down, I mean I'm nice to them but I dont associate with them and they want the trust back they once had only I won't go there again and that upsets them to no end, they like the drama and I want zero drama, so if their involved then im not. There has been some discussion about this in the family but its not like I haven't warned them of my rules for my piece of mind and the rest of the family will put up with it is none of my affair. So when it comes to family squables, I don't take sides or get involved, I deal with my family the best way I can and leave it at that.

It is a sad shame that you’re being treated like that. Can you tell them in a nice way not to say that to you anymore? ? None of us need to hear that we already know what we did.. kind, compassionate words are really helpful 😊

@A MyCOPDTeam Member it’s ignorance unfortunately, not enough is put out about our disease, unlike other diseases, the general public don’t understand, we look normal from the outside but it’s our insides that are the problem, some of us are lucky enough to have family members who understand the problems we all have, I’m one of the lucky ones, my family understand and help me if they can, when I smoked we were not told of any dangers, but I feel more needs to be shown and talked about our COPD.
