I’m still here as of 14-MAR-24. Previously, I have also hired an end of life Doula to help me ease out of this world when the time finally comes and I can comply with California’s Death With Dignity laws. I’d put a pet down to end its suffering. Why is it so wrong to discuss choosing the same for myself ?

I kept a journal for awhile
About what I ate and drank
And when I coughed the worst and found out what I ate played a big part in the coughing
Once I gave up those foods
Milk
Gassy foods
Foods that take a lot of oxygen to digest
My coughing is a lot more manageable
Prayers go out for us all
Slow and steady we go

I find whenever I eat now to do so slow and deliberate as it is far too easy to aspirate particles down the wind pipe to bring on a painful coughing fit which if not slowed down leads to near panic. I have learned to slow the breathing, purse breathing and to eat and injest purposely to avoid this choking on food !

Hi Joanne,
I feel for you, I to have this, for me it happens when I am hungry and try to eat and breath at the same time, I know that sounds bizarre, but it does happen to me, also something in my throat stops food going down and I have to wait before I take the next bite of food, I start coughing , this can be annoying because while I am waiting the dinner is getting cold, especially a rice dish , just lately I am without sleep and that is when it happens a lot, I have started to drink a lot of water before my first mouthful of food. Try it please .
Breath easy.
God bless you.

First I would use my rescue inhaler. Next I would make a temperature change (usually by breathing air from the freezer). If that didn’t bring it under control, I would try the inhaler again. It usually would subside. Very scary moments. Prayers for you in dealing with this situation.

Here's a technique the Dr taught me. Try coughing with your mouth closed. It makes for a more gentler cough, but more forceful and more productive. I have bad coughing spells in the past and it lead to a tear at the end of my esophagus. It took an operation to repair it.It's not easy to close your mouth to cough. Seems almost counter productive, but it does work. In almost two years now I have not had the coughing spells I once had. ( Knock on wood ) Hope this helps. Good luck with it. God bless.
