Exercise For The Winded

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Harleysville, PA

Hey ! I'm reading so many people here push exercises to help manage this disease.
I can't get up a flight of stairs without stopping, what do you all recommend for exercise?

@A MyCOPDTeam Member keep climbing those stairs! It doesn't matter that you have to stop and breathe, you aren't sitting and doing nothing and THAT is what counts. Keeping the lungs active is the purpose of exercising and it can keep that next stage from advancing faster. Yes, if you have the chance for rehab take it! Good luck! Chris. August 20, 2024

Cardio pulmonary rehab will help you get quality of life back!! If you get Medicare they will pay for it as long as your Pulminologist says you need it. You start slowly, exercising with oxygen if you are on it. You will improve what you can do I promise!! It’s a struggle but it gets so much better. More good breathing days. Who doesn’t want that? Good luck!!

@A MyCOPDTeam Member🙇‍♀️🙌 Pursed lip breathing. That’s a huge game changer for any and all types of exercise or exertion.
Housework, yard work, grocery shopping, climbing stairs.
Breathe in through your nose and blow out through pursed lips, like blowing out candles.
I learned to do this before I knew it was a thing. That’s just how I got through my days. I needed Pulmonary Rehab they teach you so much to help you help yourself. Quality of life.
Mine was in a hospital on the respiratory wing, I wanted to know exactly what and how much I could do without dying.
It encouraged me to live life.
Trust me I know it, I live it.
God Bless you and Breathe Easy

I agree at least you try. I go to pulmonary rehab twice a week for the exercise . The rest of the week i try to take a nice long walk. But i really do love the rehab it does wonders.

Hi @A MyCOPDTeam Member, Years that I'm not able to climb stairs or even walk in the neighbourhood BUT what I can tell you is that CardioPulmonary Rehabilitation does help to put back on your feet and at least to be able to perform the daily tasks (quality of life improves). You should ask your doctors for a Rehab center. Hugs! 🌺
