Does Anyone Suffer Back Or Lung Pain When Coughing?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Elkwood, VA

I also get very tired all the time and am on o2 24/7 at 8 litres. When I eat I get like I am choking but can't bring anything up. Sometimes I will throw up mucus. Is this normal?

The lungs don't have pain receptors, so they don't cause pain, but the muscles in your chest, back and shoulders definitely do. When you're working really hard to breathe or coughing a lot, all of those muscles are called upon to do things they don't normally do, and they get sore and tired. That's what causes the pain: sore muscles. In some cases, people have coughed so hard they've torn muscles or even broken ribs. Check with your doc to see what you can do about the things you're dealing with.

Thanks Jean for your reply. I had a chest xray done today, but my back is so sore. My husband said it was probaly muscles also. My hospice nurse ordered the chest xray so we will see. It actually started with a chest pain and radiated to the back and it's been like this for going on two weeks. Oxycode doesn't do much for pain.
