Has Anyone Had A Compression Fracture That Had An Impact On Their Breathing?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

About 3 months ago I suffered a compression fracture (T8) and have extra difficulty breathing. This causes me to get tired faster and I have to rest much more often. Has anyone every had the same problem? Doctor told me it should heal itself anywhere up to 3 months but so far.....not. Thanks!!

Pain always interferes with breathing. Unfortunately, osteoporosis is one of the things many of us have to content with, either because we just have it or because it was helped along by our consumption of steroids, so these types of injuries are common.

Hi Jean, I just had a dexa scan and the doctor said I had osteopenia (sp?). It's been almost 4 months since this first flared-up. I will use a brace if I go to grocery store, vacuum, etc. I use a heating pad constantly. SO frustrated!! At times it even travels to my ribs and shoulders. Thinking I should see an osteo doctor. Appreciate comments. Thank you!!

Yep fractured my T9 almost three years ago. Nothing they can do but put me a brave for six weeks and yes it's been harder to breathe ever since.

@MarciaTillyNelson yes I have had a few compression fractures. Right now I am dealing with T78and9. In May I had 3 lower lumbar fractures. The lower ones were much easier to deal with. The upper back ones are horrible. I was fitted for a brace and it makes my breathing horrible. I refuse to wear it because it puts my breathing in jeapordy. I have been hospitalized enough with breathing problems and not going there again. Being on ventilator 4 times is enough for me. I was told 3-4 months for these to heal. But I am having my doubts. The inhalers and being on prednisone makes the bones very brittle. It really sucks. I have not been anywhere other than the Dr for a long time. I was on oxygen only at night but with the pain from my back i was told to use it as often as I need it. Well I need it 24 hours otherwise my O2 Sats drop really quick. I haven’t driven for weeks cuz the pain is too bad. Sorry if i am a bummer but you asked and I told you. I have dealt with this since May. What a wonderful life. Most of my day is spent on ice pack and resting. It’s not fun. Take care
