Would It Be Helpful To Play A Wind Instrument?
I played in band in school and miss it. I played cornet and bassoon, but have not touched either in years, nor do I have either one. Is it possible to play an instrument, and if so, what would be the easiest for me to play with COPD? I do not have enough breath to sing in church, but do some sing alongs to parts of radio music.
Harmonicas are very popular among COPD groups. I know several that actually do concerts and performances. They're not great, but it hardly matters. They're all having fun and it really is good for breath control. There's no reason not to try it yourself, but it would be really fun in a group.
I've read on other copd discussion boards that the harmonica is best for us because your breath needs to move in and out. I've not tried it so you go ahead and let us know how it works for you. :)
Some rehab programs have a Harmonica for Health group.
Did you hear me? ...pretty sad eh?
Playing a wind instrument starts with breathing correctly. This can only be good. In any event the trick is to get you diaphragm working at its best. Walking, running, cycling, rowing, in fact all exercise is what you need. If it is difficult at first keep on building it up. It worked for me. Always carry a rescue pack (cortisone & antibiotic) and only use when you feel the symptoms starting. You will feel your chest is different and think it may be starting. Take the res ue pack then. Your symptoms should become less frequent then.
@A MyCOPDTeam Member, oooh a native flute! Now that would be cool. Like it.
