Chest Pain And COPD. Is There A Link?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Hastings, NZ

My heart beats too fast and apparently its "normal for me". I also regularly experience severe chest pains. Sometimes my heart feels like a solid heavy rock weighing heavily in my chest. Some tests have been done, and I've been told its NOT my heart, but I'm worried because I have no idea what else it could be.

There can be, certainly. You've had the tests, and it probably isn't your heart, but it's no less worrying. COPD affects people differently and your COPD could be causing some muscular pain because of how you breathe. Sometimes the lungs rub against the pleural cavity membranes and that can be painful. Some of the medications we take have increased heart rate as one of the side effects; any of the bronchodilators could have that effect.

If you haven't had a pulmonary rehab program, ask for a referral. The exercise will help you and you'll learn good breathing techniques as well. Highly recommended.

Morning Annz
The pain your experiencing is a symptom of your COPD. The severity depends on activity and emotional state. Your cardiovascular system is effected by your pulmonary regions (lungs) harder to breathe harder the heart works to get blood into you to give oxygen. It’s even more dangerous for someone who has heart issues along with COPD.
You have to breathe through it slowly so don’t hyper ventilate. You should use your oxidometer to check heart rate and oxygen levels when you have those episodes and bring it with you to your dr office.
I have a journal I keep 3 times a day and anytime I have an episode that causes fibrillation or drops in sugar, oxygen, blood pressure all of it plays a part

Yep my pulse is usually in the 100's, I also get a racing heart and sometimes what I call "chest thumps" or "dancing heart" when my heart beat becomes really irregular. All the doc said was that my heart has an irregular beat (duh) and after wearing a heart monitor for a few days they've concluded that is not dangerous and that I should try to relax about it. Still very scary at times though.
Be well and try to accept it.

Found all these answers.very useful. I had a heart valve replaced 5 years ago . So I think when I get the.pain it's my heart even thou doctor says it isn't.
Now I understand it is more likely 2 be caused by my copd because of lack of oxygen breathing is more difficult.thank you everyone for your views.x
