Why Wouldn't A Pcp Automatically Refer You To A Pulmonary Doctor?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I honestly believe that my illness would not be as bad as it is if I would have been referred to a pulmonary doctor years ago. I was diagnosed with copd in 2007, and never referred to a pulmonary doctor until 2015. I don't believe that primary care physicians know that much about COPD so all they do is give you inhalers and treatment for it. All them years, all they done was give me different inhalers and breathing treatments and sometimes chest x-rays. I have only had this pulmonary doctor a… read more

It is my feeling that your PCP SHOULD have referred you, especially after doing a chest X-ray, you may wanna ask your pulmonary doc this same question, you may have grounds for legal relief, lawsuit!

Cheryl, Alpha-1 is genetic. That means you have it from birth. Chances are good that your mother had it as well and that's what she died from. To get it, both your parents must carry the recessive gene, so in that sense, it does run in families. However whatever PCP told someone that it's passed by women needs to go back to school. (And if he's your PCP, I'd definitely trade him in for a new model, because he's dangerous!)

To get back to Alpha-1, if you have it, chances are good that your kids might have it as well. They need to be tested and their children need to be tested. Alpha-1 causes not only lung damage, but also liver damage. If your mother-in-law also has COPD, chances are good that it's Alpha-1, especially if she never smoked. That increases the chances of your kids having it a lot. So please get them tested. Have your husband tested.

Just so you know only about 25% of the people who smoke develop COPD, although I think that number will go up as we are diagnosing it much earlier now. And of those fo9lks who have COPD, 25% of them have never smoked....and they're not all Alpha-1s. There are some people who develop it and we really have no explanation at all.

If you filed for disability, it should go pretty quick. When I filed, they said lung issues usually get fast tracked.

Have you ever had the lung function test? That will tell you everything you want to know about your lung capacity. Sorry these mess were split my fingers get crazy on this I phone later at night. Those infusions are expensive. I do believe I would have a chat with my PCP and expect some plain understandable answers. I pray that God would put His healing hand on the Alpha 1 area and let that be cleared and give you peace of mind. Let me know how it goes. Hugs and prayers from Alabama
