Hi Cindy. Yours is a complicated question to understand, indeed. IT took several hospital visits to get this issue managed well. Here's an article describing Metabolic CO2 from a clinical standpoint: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diagnosti...
Just know that the blood CO2 balance shifts (back and forth) over Time and CAN be deadly when it goes out of whack. Akso know it is not just about Breathing, but other things affecting blood circulation can tilt the levels in the wrong direction without warning too.
ps. Forgot to say this is why staying Hydrated IS KEY to managing our Respiratory conditions. Water ( has Oxygen in it) helps reduce and maintain the correct CO2 level over the longer term of daily activity. You can have too much Oxygen, but never enough WATER.
be Well. . and be well informed
Hi again, Cindy. "Smell the flowers, Blow OUT the candles" was exactly the NEW breathing technique described to me in Rehab. The COUNT really doesn't matter but 3-4 IN and 6-10 OUT is a good start. That puts you at 4 full breathing cycles a minute. Do 5-10 of those and give yourself a break. You will be tired out, indeed. One group of these every hour and you will NOT be a mouth-breather very long - trust me! 😉
As for the biPAP machine, it is doing most of what our regular breathing does for us to help get the CO2 out of the blood. Except it is run by a computer. My DOC can get a report of how much it is used over the month. I think the insurance cutoff is 5 hours per day minimum. When you can get your breathing rhythm to match that machine you are on to something. But your mileage wil vary every day. 🤑
be Well
@A MyCOPDTeam Member What could help:
The primary purpose of pursued lips breathing is to promote Carbon dioxyde elimination. Breath in through your nose (counting: 1,2) and then Breath out through your mouth with pursued lip (counting: 1,2,3,4), slowly, no forcing.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Sorry I don't understand your question: are you speaking about O2 (oxygen supplementation) or CO2 (carbon dioxide)? Hugs 🧸
Dominique thank you for your reply I’m struggling with C02 My ABG on Monday was 55 HIGH A month ago was 114 at hospital for a week stent. I would like to get some idea to how long you need to wear a bipap everyday to just help keep me out of the hospital ( what others on here are doing) O and I’m a mouth breather, the pursed lip (how many reps?) and is it like blowing out your candles??
