Has Anyone In The Group Used A Vibration Board For Working Out? I'm Curious If It Might Be A More Approachable Way To Work Out?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Des Moines, IA

My doctor told me to stay active in order to get off the oxygen. I am struggling to find ways to be on my feet. I have been trying work outs, but I get really winded. So I got a vibration board. Supposedly using it for ten minutes equals a half hour walk!

Back to your doctor advising you to exercise more to be less dependent on the oxygen, I would like to hug his neck.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Thank you for explaining about your experience with the rehab. I'm nervous to go because I love doing things on my own, and I don't like anyone telling me what to do! 😂 I don't follow directives very well. Very cool that you are going to therapy. Most people could use therapy at different points in life, and I've even heard that going to therapy is like going to the dentist nowadays. I've been to therapy before, years ago.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Pulmonary rehad is awesome i go twice a week i love it. The best part is they help you so much the best exercise for what you need. I have been going there for about 3 years now it has helped me in so many ways. I also see a therapist i just need to get more honest with her some day. Well you take care and have a great easy breathing day every day is a blessing for us.

That's great!! I was thinking about getting a treadmill. I have a lot of work out dvd's and a work out app on my phone. It's hard to know how hard to work out vs. pushing myself too hard. Hopefully I'll get those answers at rehab.

Hi, @A MyCOPDTeam Member - honesty is why the intake screening appointment is 1:1 and so vital to help you feel your best during and after the program.

I am stubborn to a fault, so learning how to do something properly and not just blow off proper form and posture corrections necessary to achieve the proper form is an important part of the conversation during the intake screening.

These folks are used to hesitant or reluctant participation, and if you warn them ahead of time that you bristle when being told what to do, it may help them figure out a coaching style to work with you better.

As @A MyCOPDTeam Member said, one day he “wants to be more honest” with his therapists, and whatever that may mean is different for each of us. Some folks may suffer from depression, so self-sabotage may be something they have to work on as part of their overall improvement goals. Some people may be unable to say they are tired and need more rest intervals while learning how to be healthier. I’m wicked competitive, so learning how to get out of my own way and NOT pay attention to what others are doing so that I don’t overtax my abilities is a huge issue for me.

We all want to feel competent and capable, so being vulnerable among strangers with strangers who are trying to guide us safely is a multi-pronged trigger for many.

In my case, the 4 nurses who are respiratory fitness therapists have put us in groups of 2-4 people of like capabilities and stamina, and we’re isolated during the strength training exercises to various equipment so that we have fewer people using the same equipment to be distracted by or in competition with.

They come while we’re exercising and take measurements, offer suggestions, advise breaks, etc. They truly get it, I believe, that fighting ourselves to achieve success is truly a new body memory we all need to create. It took a long time to get as deconditioned as each of us may be, and it’s going to take time to build our new normal for being successful and measuring success while sustaining the effort over time.

Hang in there. I think you’ll do great. If it takes longer to retrain your body, and your subconscious reactions, that’s ok, too.
