How Is The Need For Supplemental Oxygen Assessed And Measured?
77 yrs old. Diagnosed 5 years ago. Most activity brings on SOB
A spirometry test won't give results that are used in determining the need for supplemental 02. The standard test to determining the need for 02 starts with a walk with an oximeter. If the oximeter reading indicates an Sp02 of 88 or less, supplementary 02 can be prescribed. If the walk exceeds 6 minutes with values still above 88, 02 is not indicated. Spirometry gives you FEV1 values as well as others that help the pulmonologist diagnose the extent of the disease and appropriate medications. An arterial blood gas tests are usually given to determine the levels of CO2 in the blood.
Your pulmonologist should ask for a spirometry test, which calculates how much O2 you can inhale/exhale. An arterial blood test will also tell the doctor what your blood levels of O2 are. With this information he/she can decide what level of O2 supplementation you'll need.
Great information Jean, I truly appreciate it.
