Good Afternoon. I think i can answer what your asking, or least give it a try. Steroids dampen the immune system and reduce inflammation. Why have I been prescribed maintenance steroids? Maintenance steroids are sometimes used in the treatment of COPD to reduce respiratory symptoms and control serious attacks. I am doing a three burst right now of 40mg of predinsone. Because i have been struggling all week with my breathing and don't want to end up in the hospital so the steroid is my hope even though it is a love hate relationship. Hope this answer helps. How long can you be on steroids with COPD?
A short treatment course (three to seven days) of corticosteroids is as effective as a long treatment course (10–15 days) for patients with severe or very severe COPD (SOR: A, meta-analysis of consistent randomized controlled trials). Short-term treatment is now the preferred option (SOR: C, expert opinion).

Yes i hate taking any steroid, but will be the first one to say they have save my life more than once. That being said the trade off for taking them down the is what is scary. Hang in there and just fight the fight that needs fighting. God Bless!
