How Does A Laryngectomee Such As Myself Utilize Your Method?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Fond Du Lac, WI

I watched your video and the straws don't seem to work as there is still to much air around the straws when I breathe in. Any suggestions for us "lary's"? I have a plastic tube in my throat with a button to cover the hole.

ANY amount of cold is too cold for me @A MyCOPDTeam Member, and it isn't really cold yet. I can't WAIT until we get our 30 below zero with snow and high winds. I live in an end apartment that has quite a few windows that face west. In the summer it gets ungodly hot when the sun comes around and in the winter the wind makes it very cold in here. I have insulated drapes and plastic over the windows, but even when I'm sitting at my computer the cold air comes in through the walls; they must not have a lot of insulation in them. So sorry to hear that so many temperature changes affect your breathing! That must be very scary for you at times. II hope it does warm up for you tomorrow!
I have had my plastic tube for 11 years Wally. I had throat cancer and they had to remove my voice box, esophagus and a few other things; I have to depend on gravity to get food and liquid to go down behind the tube and into my stomach. I can eat almost anything I want to though, so that's a good thing.
You have a good day also and I certainly will TRY to stay warm!πŸ˜€

The question was asked at the end of a video I watched on How to Breathe Correctly @EriicCompton. I had no idea it would end up here. It was a video that management put up I don't know how long ago. In answer to YOUR question, no, my plastic tube causes me no problems at all. The "button" that plugs into the end of the tube is called a heat/moisture exchanger and is what takes the place of what a nose does in a normal person. Any more questions, just ask. I don't mind.

PART TWO; I was in the hospital for a month and the night of the day I got home, there was a knock on my door. It was my manager telling me that a pipe had burst in the apartment next door and we were flooded. Fortunately my two daughters were still staying with me to help me out, so we had to pack up the cat and all the supplies I would need for a couple of days. Fortunately I have a sister who owns a condo right around the corner from me, so we spent I think 2 nights there. The management was just wonderful! They, within an hour had huge fans going to dry out the carpet and all my furniture was up on blocks! This was at 3:00 in the morning! Unfortunately the day I got home I got a huge delivery of supplies for me and all of that was still in cardboard boxes in my living room. However, everything INSIDE the cardboard boxes was in plastic-sealed containers so we got lucky. I think that's the end of my story. Sorry for boring you with all the details, but I guess you just had a way of bringing out the story in me @A MyCOPDTeam Member, so I thank you for that!!
If I haven't put you to sleep, I hope you have a really nice day today and enjoy every minute of it. Do you have a lot of trouble breathing? Oh I almost forgot that you probably have a vitamin for that.πŸ˜€Just teasing you a bit. Anyway, I'll talk to you later. Chris

My family has broken up somewhat too, but it's because my oldest sister and her daughter have moved about a 4 hour drive away from here. Neither my other sister or I can se well enough to drive that distance anymore. Yes, we all gossip about each other, but in the end we all get along ok. It's a shame you don't have a friend or someone else to lean on when you are feeling down. Does your son get along with the rest of the family? I mean to say, would they step up to the plate if, Heaven forbid, anything should happen to you? It's hard to put things back together when you are the only one who wants to do that. I have no words of wisdom to give you and I'm sorry about that, but I do understand what you mean @A MyCOPDTeam Member. Please just take care of yourself!

And yet another thank you @A MyCOPDTeam Member! I had no idea of all you're living with and appreciate your sharing! You are one hell of a strong woman and do have our Lord's blessing. And @A MyCOPDTeam Member - my fingers can be uncooperative too - lol. It's frustrating! And it's 11/15 - I've got catching up to do. Wishes for ez breathing to all of us!
