I've Read About An Ankle Swelling When One Has Copd. I Wonder Why???

Benton City, WA

But now both my ankles are swollen after I'm up and around. They both look quite normal when I get up in the morning.

Retaining fluid is not uncommon for people with COPD and a variety of lung issues. It's also a symptom of congestive heart failure, which is hard to distinguish from COPD, so it's a good idea to be sure that you get both the heart and the lungs checked out so you know what the cause is.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member, you may want to double check me on this, but I think that's called edema. It started in my toes, then worked its way to my feet, then ankles, then up to the knees, over a period of a year or two.

The doctor suggested I wear compression socks, put my feet up for several minutes a day, cut back on the salt and drink more water. All of these are very good suggestions. But she should have looked into it more, because this most likely does not go away. Let her/him get some blood work done, so they can determine what is causing it. But in the meantime, think about those things to do for your comfort.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member, I second everyone else who suggested you call your doc for an appointment.

It could be seasonal / weather / barometric pressure related, but I doubt that because you didn’t say you’d experienced this problem before.

Our lungs don’t function as well as they should, putting a strain on our hearts and other organs. While it may be a simple matter of hypertension or a rise in your blood pressure that can be fixed with a water pill to help you shed the excess fluid, it’s better to have the tests run and be told it’s no biggie than to ignore it and find out it’s something serious.

Hugs, and happy Monday to you.

I would get it checked. There can be a few reasons for it. Let your Dr give you the answer. I would be concerned about water around the heart, especially with COPD.

I use compression sock and water pill, per Kidney Dr.
God Bless and remember. Slow down and Breathe Eazy. :-)
