Has Anyone Had A Double Lung Transplant?
I am considering the possibility of a double lung transplant. Just wondering if anyone here has had it and what the outcome has been like. Thank you and may God bless you and Jesus hold close.
Yes, I had a double lung transplant 3 1/2 years ago and doing pretty good. I am 66 years old now, when I went through the surgery I had a lot of issues with my lungs due to an accident that I had about 10 years prior plus I am a retired veteran and some of my lung damage was from the desert and the burning oil fields. I am 100 disabled through VA because of that.
You have to go through a very extensive process, it takes about a year to go through all of it and then the waiting to see if you are approved to get on the national list, then the waiting begins and you have to be within like 2-3 hours away from where the surgery will be performed. My surgery took over 15 hours, normally it takes about 6-7 hours, then they left my chest open for 5 days to let it dry out, I was put into a medical induced coma during that period. All in all the surgery was worth it, I still hurt a lot from the surgery, my sternum feels like I was kicked by a horse, and you take about 40-50 pills a day which a lot of them are vitamins. I try to hit the gym at least 5 days a week for a hour each day, 30 minutes lifting weights and then 30 minutes treadmill.
I have several friends who've had both single and double lung transplants. If you really want to know about them, find a center that does the procedure and go be evaluated for it there. You'll have the most thorough workup you've ever had and should have a chance to talk with people who've had TXs. All your questions will be answered and you'll have good information on which to base your decision. BTW, everyone I know who's had one, including the people who didn't have great results and some who are no longer with us, say they'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
I have a friend who is now 1 yr post double lung transplant and doing great. I had 1 friend who unfortunately rejected the transplant…you just don’t know. It is intense an intense certification process. And you will be on anti rejection drugs for life. You also will still need to be cautious during cold/flu season since your immune system will be suppressed. But the benefit of transplant can far outweigh the risk. Unfortunately, I didn’t meet the strict criteria to qualify to be put on the transplant list. I encourage you explore everything involved, including immediate travel and extended lodging availability and costs if the hospital is not in your area. The post op period is intense with constant clinic and lab visits, but it’s worth it if the transplant is successful. When my husband had his kidney transplant, we were lucky to live 10 miles from the hospital. We talked to others who had to rent an apt for a couple of months.
