What Do We Do About Wheeziness?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Collierville, TN

I hear several people talk about being wheezy during these late winter months. I've begun to notice it too, especially when I go to bed. What exactly causes it and what can we do about it?

Wheezing usually indicates some tightening or inflammation in the bronchial tubes, so it could be an indication of a cold, flu or the beginning of an exacerbation. Taking mucinex, NAC, drinking lots of water, getting extra rest, all those things can help. Just make sure it doesn't morph into something more.

When I start wheezing, I usually use my albuteral inhaler or take a breathing treatment with the nebulizer. Also drink lots of water.

I don't take any of that stuff. When it comes to water, well, if you have a water bottle at home then fill it up in the morning and sip it off and on during the day and have it full at night beside your bed so that if you do get thirsty then you have it right there to sip at. If you're wheezing a lot get to a doctor right away. Keep in mind that with the coronavirus worldwide our lungs are probably not going to handle it all that great if we come in contact with it. I'm not trying to scare anyone, but it's something to keep in mind.

I take Singulair, use my nebulizer and take Benidryl around 9pm. I take the Benidryl because of one of my medications but it helps me sleep better too.
