I Am 75 Yrs Old With Mod-severe COPD. And Am Having An Umbilical Hernia Repair.....am Very Nervous About The Surgery.
I have had previous surgeries years ago, but wasn't this incapacitated. Am not on O2....am trying to keep active by walking and keeping busy. Am more worried about post-op...any suggestions?
While seeing your pulmo regarding your surgery is a good idea, I would suggest that you have a good heart to heart with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist. You want those two to be experienced in working with people with COPD. especially the anesthesiologist, as that's the person whose job it is to keep you under and monitor your breathing and response to the surgery. They need to be really good at what they do and you need to feel comfortable that they know what to watch for and how to monitor you appropriately to a good conclusion. After that, let them do their jobs.
Definately have a talk with your medics - just like you very nervous about my hernia - it is good that they have agreed to operate. Keep your heart up
and I will keep you in my thoughts x
Heather Susan, if you ever have to have another surgery, I'd make sure that both the anesthesiologist and the surgeon know. That will help them in figuring how much to give you and give them a heads up that you take awhile to recover. It's information you should share.
Talk with your pulmonologist about the surgery. He/she can give you some good advice. Then, first and foremost, talk to God about it (if you are a believer). He will give you all the assurance you need. If you're not a believer, let me know, and I'll walk through. It's simple and will only take a couple of minutes. The only requirement is a sincere heart.
Oh good and i am amazed that you where up to the long drive home. X
