Cannot Get Up And Release Mucus

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question šŸ’
Toms River, NJ

I am looking for any suggestion anyone may have to help me. I cannot get mucus up and out. I have tried muccinex twice daily, decaf tea with honey and lemon, nothing seems to help causing many breathing problems. Hoping for ideas so I can feel better

@A MyCOPDTeam Member there is breathing exercises you can try, three normal breaths in and out three full breaths in and on the third breath out really huff it out with force ! 2. breath stacking a wee breath in hold 10 count bring in a bit more air hold and finally a last bit of air hold then release. The idea being to stack each inhalation on the other really fully inflating the lungs this is great prior to using a inhaler as it allows you to take in more of the med. ! Best wishes !

Try postural drainage and have someone hit your back gently with the side of the hand. That helps to move the mucous up and out.

You need to visit your doctor and have him prescribe an inhaler. Iā€™m on a Ventolin inhaler and it helps with the mucus. Breath in through your nose making your stomach muscles push out, hold 5 seconds, exhale making your stomach muscles pull in. That is a breathing exercise you can try when you are having trouble breathing. With any breathing exercise you should have an Oximeter on your left index finger to make sure your oxygen level is raising.

Hi MaureenSeverini, the best thing I can tell is to do purse breathing. What you do is sit comfortably, breath in as much as u can through your nose, close your lips loosely and exhale through your lips, make sure your cheeks pop out a little so the air comes out slowly. If you have a real problem breathing then I wouldn't try this excercise. Talk to your doctor and see if there is a inhaler you might be able to use. I know this breathing excercise works for me. I also find that walking helps to open your broncial tubes which allows the mucus to free itself. I hope this information can help you and I wish you a good day.

I was told to drink my water at room temperature as cold ice water will not help with bringing up mucus, so I tried that and believe in it
