Phlegm Blocking Windpipe

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
West New York, NJ

This has happened a few times and is so scary. Upon arising a tiny bit of phlegm is blocking windpipe and can't breathe- Need to cough it out- Tried a sip of water and rescue inhaler- Any other suggestions that I could prepare night before- just in case?

Don't be scared we all get that... just relax, sit up in bed and deep breathe through your nose, hold for 4 seconds if you can... repeat a few times to calm down and help loosen it up.. you can get it out and you won't choke because it will either come out or go down... drink lots of water and take mucinex to thin it out... and use avr nasal saline to clear the junk from sinuses..., then a couple of cups of coffee and you will be okkk! 🦋

Yeah, keep the windpipe moist. Take it out night before & place in water with your dentures on night stand. Remember to shake it well to loosen phlegm. lolol

Sorry sweetie, just had to voice the image in my head. Really don't know, maybe stick a lozenge in cheek before sleep ? All I can do is huff it out in am but I don't "usually" get gunk, just certain times if ya catch my drift. I'm sure the intelligent folks will have lots of advice !

Hugs !

Well I found out something else... my oxygen concentrator has a cup for water! So I used it last night while sleeping and tho I still had the phlegm it wasn't as thick and was easy to cough up.. maybe the extra moisture in respitory system helped... a new thing to add to the war chest!! If anyone else tries this please post the results 🦋

I did the homework on the water... who knew right?? Everyday we learn new and different things we can do in addition to deep breathing and exercise...I will always share here anything new I find as we are all in this battle together🦋

yes always room temp. water. I order it in rest. w/lemon and add my Truvia Liquid which i carry in my purse. Never drink any colas or carbonated drinks. Dr. recommended the Truvia, do not use pink, blue or yellow sweetners.....none are good for you. I may try some Mucinex also.
