Does Anyone Cough So Much They Feel They Are Going To Choke To Death And Can't Breath?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

I cough at night and get to the point where sometimes I pass out. I also have passed out from coughing while I am up and have injured myself several times. But, my main question is, can you choke to death from coughing, because you can't get mucous up? I take cough syrup and pills prescribed to help with coughing, but sometimes it doesn't help. Any suggestions appreciated.

I have that same problem and it is tough. A new medication called Bevespi came out and my doctor put me on it. He said it would dry up the mucus. The first week I was on it, it made me cough everything up easily but then it affected my breathing and I got so short of breath I had to quit taking it. My doctor now has me taking two Mucinex tabs in the morning and two at night and it seems to help, plus the more water I drink, the more it helps thin mucus enough to get it out. And for some reason which I don't understand, some days it is easier to do than other days. I wish they would come up with something to really thin mucus since it is a big problem in COPD for some of us.

I was at meeting ,we were talking about choking . I get choking a couple time a month. It's either mucus or drip from my nose. I was told to sit on the edge chair lean over try to slow your cough ,if you can drink water, kind make a fist and under neath your breast . And press in . With you fist. I think it's called hymicker, I problely spelt it wrong. If some in the room with you, they stand in back of you. I try honey ,water musinex cough meds. I scare my husband when this happens. Or I lean over the counter top. I hope this helps good night

Have you ever tried mucimist in the nebulizer? I use my pure oxygen for nebs but mucimist is what they give you in the hospital with exasperations. It stinks, like rotten eggs but boy it loosens mucus! I swear by that stuff. It's actually acetylcysteine. Ask your doctor about it. It's kept me alive and off the ventilator more than once. My head and foot go up and down like a hospital bed. It definitely helps to breathe and cough less when you sleep elevated.

I don't think you would die, but you could be pretty sick as a result. You need to talk with your doc and discuss a treatment plan to help you reduce the mucous production. I suggest you talk about daliresp or azithromycin taken three days a week. Both treatments are to reduce inflammation in the lungs, and therefore mucous production.
