How Often Should Someone With COPD Have A Pulmonary Function Test?
It depends a lot on you, how your disease presents, how many exacerbations you have and how often, and to some extent on your doc and his/her preferences. My COPD is stable and I haven't had one for several years. There's no reason to think anything's changed, so I see no reason to have one done; neither does my doc.
Some docs want to do at least a spirometry every time they see you. If you've been ill, or having lots of exacerbations, that's probably not a bad idea, but I'd be happier if they spent more time trying to get you past the point of so many illnesses and less time with spirometry that may not be telling them anything new. In general, if things are stable, I don't see a need for one more often than three to five years. If they're not stable, more often is probably not a bad idea. Just MHO.......
I haven't had one for a couple of years now as my COPD is pretty stable as well. As long as I keep my oxygen on at all times like I am supposed to I don't have many SOB episodes.
Should be done at a minimum every two years.
I have one about every 6 mths. Hate them, makes me tired all that bowing into machine, also have checkup every 3 mths.
