What Are The Side Effects Of O2?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone find themselves taking the cannula off in your sleep? I never seem to wake up with it on. What are the plus' of using oxygen and the minus' of using oxygen?

If you're having trouble keeping your canella on try using a big safety pin to anchor it to your pj top. That works for a lot of people.

The plus of using O2 is that you don't get right heart failure or brain damage from O2 deprivation. O2 is the only drug/med that's been proven to extend life for COPD patients. Using it means you can exercise at your hardest to improve the efficiency of your lung function and build your endurance and stamina. That helps you avoid getting sick in the first place and means that when you do catch something you get over it quicker. Basically it means that doing everything is easier and does less damage to your body.

Compared to those advantages, the inconvenience is pretty minor. I use O2 for exercise, sleep and flying. I also use it when I'm doing something that requires more than just walking around: carrying groceries, hauling luggage through airports, etc. I rarely have anyone pay any attention to me and my O2 and if they do, it's usually to ask me where I got my equipment or that they wish their grandmother would use hers to get out of the house.

Use of O2 means a good quality of life. Not using it could mean a faster death; something I don't want.

I use a cannula that has a tab on it that helps hold it place when I sleep. They gave it to me when I was in the hospital.I didn't know they had them so asked my oxygen supplier if they could get them for me and that has helped me a lot before I would wake up and it be on my forehead or around the side of my face. May be something you could try. Good luck

Using your O2 during sleep help to keep your O2 sats stable. I have found putting the hose behind me at the top of my head board helps keep it from wrapping around me at night. However, if you are using a moisture bottle on your compressor, having your hose higher than your head may trap moisture in the hose and deliver a spray of water with the oxygen. also securing it tightly under chin my chin helps. I sleep on my side now and find it always helps keep it secure during the night and I wake much rested.

Linda, I used to have problems with waking up and finding my cannula wasn't on. Then I started putting it on over my head so the tube runs down my back. It is so much more comfy that way and I have never woken up without it. Also helps to use the super soft cannulas. You won't even feel like you're wearing it.

I used to have a problem until I started sleeping on my back. Now it stays in and I get better sleep (on average 6-6.5 hours each night). Might be able to sleep longer except my cat wakes me up every a.m. at 6:45!
