Have had this twice in last 6 months. Are there any OTC options or do I need to switch inhalers?

@A MyCOPDTeam Member Unfortunately, there are no other way than to rinse your mouth properly after each use of Symbicort, or of any other spray therapy (as most of them contain corticosteroids, which are the reason of a decrease in our immune system and therefor easy to catch Candidiasis within mouth and throat). Antifungal therapy exist : ask for it to your doctor. Candidasis shouldn't stay too long of time as it might infect your lung and be systemic, reason why it must be treat with antifungal. Hugs 🧸

@A MyCOPDTeam Member I got thrush 3 times early on in using the steroid inhalers. The first my body seemed to overcome it the next the oral rinse that was unpleasant to use and the third time with prescription meds from my doctor. Since then I haven't had it more than tiny spots. I found that if I keep my tongue clean it seems to not take hold anymore.

Thank you for your response. I usually drink plenty of fluids, but not after I take my last dose of Symbicort at bedtime. I will try taking it earlier in the evening. I have been on antifungal meds twice since August. I was just wanting to figure something else out so I didn’t have to take medication again.

Hi. Carolyn. Never had that problem using Powdered or Misted inhalers. My guess is your inhale technique is weak and the powder is resting at the back of the throat. Ask your Doc to switch you to the other kind as a quick resort. But unlike others, I also doubt the Steroid ingredient ALONE is the cause.

Read through this whole article to find my suggestion is NOT even listed there:
https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/...
BUT there is a reason a lot of things on this list sound like what we deal with ALL the time. 🤔

Fungus (like bacteria and viruses) are around us all the time. WHY (or IF) they affect us depends on many things, especially our Immunity levels.

For this, I have learned STAYING HYDRATED is a quick cure for most of these ILLS. I found a couple of MED research articles that verify this, but Trust me. 😉Instead of rinsing or swishing after each use, just swallow more Water - All DAY long. 🚰
be Well.
