Overall, Nasal breathing is more beneficial. Doing so tells the Brain that "All is well" quicker than Mouth breathing. For this same reason, a slight breeze or fan can help calm us down when unknown variables throw our breathing balance out of whack.

But our Rescue techniques often involve a mixture of both. Also, more upper chest muscles are involved when ONLY mouth breathing - and each effort can become VERY tiring.

Not a medical or scientific comparison, just sharing from learned experience. Besides, a hospital nurse explained it this way during a hospital ICU visit. They are smarter than the Doctors on these issues, indeed. be Well.

I was taught to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth slowly and longer. There is something about in through the nose that helps the lungs relax besides the fact it is filtered by hairs and sinuses.
When I am SOB I do the "pursed lipped breathing" [in a tripod stance] 3 times and then take one deep breath in and let it out. Sometime have to do it a couple times but I can get my O2 back up into the 90's with that method.

I find what your said works for me. I have to remind myself when I start feeling short of breath while walking up my stairs.
