If I Have A Chest Infection I Take A 1wk Course Of Steroids. How Often Would This Have To Happen Before It Had An Impact On Muscle Wastage?
Hi Jennie. Seeing that your question went unanswered and wanted to share from experience.
Of course you should chat with your Doctor about these concerns but if you are not taking the Steroids on a daily basis, I would say don't worry about this.
In the case of a hospitalization, STEROIDS are the ONLY treatment given to reverse infection and inflammation of the Respiratory system anyway. Even here, any risk is outweighed by the end result - to get you Better!
Any short-course treatments used to overcome Flare-ups are negligible in the grand scheme of things. You probably have other issues more important to focus on.

Good point, Jennie. There are many different types of steroids in the Body. The most common complaints with Prednisone is weight gain and thinning of the bones. You might be onto something there. Athletes focus on the Anabolic steroids - a whole different type.
Here is the rest of the cautions and complaints most of US get about the CORTICO steroids we Love (to hate), esp. long term.

Thank you for that RollandO. You've answered my query very clearly.
I ask because I had recently been diagnosed with a small previously unknown fracture in my spine which was discovered after I had an MRI. Because the scan also showed muscle wastage around the fracture the hospital physiotherapist queried how often i use steroids as the said they can contribute to muscle wastage. I was puzzled as I thought athletes use steroids to build up their muscles.
