I Just Found Out That I Have The Alfa 1 Deficiency. What's The Difference Between Having COPD And Having The Deficiency?
Hi Lee77.
I don't know that the line from Alpha-1 to COPD is as strait as often described. While my Google does say that Alpha-1 can predispose one to Emphysema, so can other physical and environmental exposures. Particularly, Alpha-1 also affects other body organs, the liver and kidneys in particular. Most meds we take are broken down by one of those. The lungs only helps us breathe! ITs a Catch-22! 😳
Besides, COPD is not only a result of Emphysema (lung cell damage), because Asthma and Bronchitis often play a contributing role - depending on the City environment we live in. Especially with being a former smoker. That part I am sure of.
There are not many like you around here with BOTH. You might be better served over at the Alpha-1 site instead:

be Well.
I thought it just meant that you or your family is more likely to get COPD. I may be wrong about it. My Dr didn't events me for it as I am the only one in my family to ever have COPD.
In one sense there isn't any. One of the leading docs in Alpha-1 Deficiency said at a conference, at the end of the day it's COPD, regardless of why you have it. That said, the treatment for Alpha-1 often involves an infusion as well as the usual inhalers and other meds that are typically prescribed for COPD, so part of the treatment is different.
Thank you
Thank you I wasn't really sure about it.
