Oxygen Levels And Oximetry Says 77
I’m on oxygen 15 hrs daily plus 2 hours on the oxygen cylinder.
I do take readings with my oximeter when I’m on the oxygen it shows between 74 to 88. Yes I have changed batteries I have bought new oximeter but it still shows these same readings.
I’m on 1 ltr oxygen
Has anyone any idea why this is the case
Hi Jodie
I can tell you if it’s below 88 in the UK we advise to call an ambulance
Take care
Eric xx
Wow i never knew that, they do say you learn something new everyday thanks Jean for taking the time to explain that for me. I could be just sitting there doing nothing an it dips to 77. I see my consultant in early December so I’ll be writing down what you say and I will raise some questions around that . Again many thanks Jean xx
You need to discuss these readings with your doc to see if the results are what was expected and perhaps get a better explanation of what the doc anticipates and hopes to accomplish or discover with this 02 regimen. On the face of it, it would seem that you're not getting enough 02 to keep your saturation levels above 88 consistently, leaving you with the possibility of damage to the heart and brain over time. If this is what the doc anticipates and expects, I would ask for a thorough explanation of the intent and be sure the explanation makes sense to you. I'd also get a good explanation of when you are NOT supposed to be using the 02 and what oximeter readings are acceptable for that period of time. Talk to the doc about "titrating as you migrate", where you keep track of your 02 saturation levels as you move from activity to activity and adjust the liter flow to maintain a consistent 02 saturation level that you both agree on.
While inexpensive, the two different meters can't both be wrong and have the same readings as well if the are working correctly. 🤔
On the face, it appears you are able to keep your saturation levels within your "NORM". ONE liter flow is really low and might be overcome with some intensive breathing methods instead. There is little question with the regular readings of 88. IT is on the HIGH side of our MINimum and likely not to require additional intervention on a day to day basis.
Assuming this is reading is mostly taken when at rest, the question for your Doc would be if an increase in the Oxygen flow will allow you to be more mobile and able to perform daily tasks without undue concern.
Then together, you two could work out a plan including Pulmonary Rehab to increase your stamina to the point where the lower number of 77 is less of a real concern.
Both Dr. Tom Petty and Dr. Brian Tiep (both now deceased, but both experts in 02 usage by patients) talked about titrating (controlling the 02 flow rate) as you migrate (as you're moving around from one activity to another). We all know that we require different levels of 02 to be comfortable doing different activities. Your 02 usage varies from sitting to excersizing at great intensity; we all know that. "Titrate as you migrate" simply means changing the 02 flow to match what you're doing based on what your oximeter says about your saturation levels.
