I Have Lost A Lot Of My Taste And Smell, And There Are Reports This Is Sometimes Common For People With COPD. Why Is This Happening?
At first I thought loss of taste and smell was from COVID which I had about 1.5 years ago -- very mild because I had all the shots. But as I read what others said and I think it is more likely related to COPD. Is it from some drug I am taking, like Trelegy, berberine, novusetin, tadalafil, crestor, testosterones, etc? I could not find any connection to these drugs. Is it due to senescent cells or excessive inflammation? Also I have lost some weight, maybe this is good for me.
COPD doesn't cause weight gain. I'm downe to 75 lbs now.We lose calories every time I breath. I tried all those drinks and didn't gain at all. My Dr. explained why. Now I eat four small meals aday. Some times if we over eat it can cause stomach ache our diaphragm sits under our ribs. That's the reason for small meals. I'm on hospice and doing my best to keep my weight. I'm 84 and gods been good to me. Just. Use common sense and find what works for you. Bl we as you all.
I lost my mom to emphysema took care of her at home. Her normal weight was 125 when she passes she was 65 lbs For my muscle mass is very low now. We don't lose the weight all at once. I've had stage four awhile. I spend 2 hrs every day in am coughing up mucus, which doesn't help. I'm on oxygen 24/7 now. This disease moves at its own pace. If people are gaining weight its probably different meds causing it. Talk to a pulmonary doctor. I've been going to along time. I've worked in a hospital for years, I wouldn't put anything on here with out facts. The only good thing about not gaining weight is I can eat without weight. I'm doing everything I can to hold on to my75lbs. Our tongue has slot to do loss of taste a d smell. Which happens as we age. I can't even taste spices now. So I'm careful with those. But so many things can cause loss of taste and smell. Allergies, gum disease and different meds. Talk to a pulmonary doctor. Hope this helps we just have to learn how to adjust to different things. Bless you lanie
Senses like taste and smell tend to reduce as we get older. COVID was responsible for younger people losing taste and smell noticeably and increased the loss in older people. I don't think it is a result of COPD. Gaining weight with COPD is not unusual; many of us do because we don't get as much exercise as we used to. It's a good thing to develop a daily exercise routine to be sure that we don't gain weight. Moving more weight around requires a lot more energy.
Weight loss and gain in COPD generally doesn't come as a result of medication. The only medication I know of that causes weight gain with COPD is long term use of oral steroids. Inhaled steroids don't have that effect, or a much reduced effect, if any. What makes a difference is how much energy we have to expend to breathe. People who have to work really hard to breathe often lose weight because they're expending more energy than they can consume.
When things don't taste or smell like they used to you tend to eat less, and the long term effect is to lose weight. To an extent I guess that can be good, but it possibly could be a problem in the long run.
