Hello Elaine,
You are asking the same question I asked for months. Felt like a prisoner in my own home, but the POCs were so expensive. (My kids got me a POC for Christmas, but it apparently come without a battery, and it already weighs 7 lbs, has no instructions and all the print on the item is in Chinese!!) This company wants more money for the instructions By the time I could get a battery for it, I probably would gain about 3 lbs in weight. Much, much too heavy to carry for long. So, my co2 provider said I would have to use 15 canisters a month to qualify to rent on from them. Well, I finally reached that just using the canister in the house t keep myself from tripping over the tubing. One room for the canister and one for the concentrater. Found out that the POCs they offer are very heavy as well. Then he advised getting the small canister, you know. the one that looks like a bomb? Well, I gave in as I had two appointments coming up that week
and didn't want to struggle with the large canister any more. Got a "six pack" of them and it comes with a carrier with a handle and also a shoulder strap Using the handle was the best was for me and it looks like an black webbed attache case. It allows both pulse (which lasts longer) and continuous o2 Once I get over my fear of people staring at my nose piece, I think it is going to work out ok. And....It's free.
Didn't mean to write a book, but hope this info helps anyone who was in the spot I was in. I can walk the dog again, and maybe walk around WalMart. Wheeeeeeee
Portable oxygen concentrators are available, but they're expensive. Check the catalog of American Medical Sales in Colorado.
Hello Elaine!
I use a Philips Mini Portable Oxygen Concentrator (1.5 ltrs pm to 5ltrs pm) with capacity for 2hrs and 4 hrs battery capacity running time at 3litres per minute on pulse rate. I use it when I am out and about albeit limited. When I am at home I use a Philips Everflo Concentrator and it is powered on from the power point and runs 24/7 at continuous flow adjustable from 1.5ltrs to 6ltrs pm. I put the portable concentrator in a walker or carry it over my shoulder in a purpose made backpack. In the past I hired the oxygen cylinder 2ltr size, adjustable through the regulator from 1.5litres pm to 5litres pm at pulse rate or continuous and I found at continuous flow it used up the oxygen content super quickly and just too cumbersome for that size cylinder, let alone the cost involved. Unfortunately in my country (Australia) there is very limited funding support and only in extremely severe cases of COPD etc…….. I’m sitting outside in the sunshine right now and feeling the warmth. Glad to be alive and be kind to yourself.
All the best,
Madged
Check with your health insurance. They may pay for all or most to rent a portable oxygen (POC). I have a Freestyle POC which goes up to 5 liters of 02. I only pay a small monthly fee for it. This is great also because if something goes wrong with it, I just call the company and they replace the unit. I also have a large plug in continuous concentrator which goes up to 10 liters that I use for home. Same thing...my insurance allows me to pay a small amount each month to rent the unit, which the company maintains. Don't give up hope. You can still have your freedom to be out and about.
