Does This Mean I Have Mild Emphysema?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Dallas, TX

38 yr old female. Non smoker. SOB started after renovating a home and being exposed to black mold and chemicals on November 2022. SOB has stopped now. I’m breathing normal and exercising again. Outside of the anxiety of possibly having mild emphysema I feel fine. My nurse informed me that it looks like I have mild emphysema based on Ct scan but this was prior to receiving my PFT results. Im currently waiting on a consultation with pulmonologist to understand what these PFt and CT scan all… read more

Make an appointment with you family Dr. or Respirelogist and have them explain this in layman's terms.

Update 9/29/23
I followed up with a pulmonologist. I was told I do not have COPD nor emphysema back in May of this year. I felt it was important to share this update since I’m aware of the impact of a new diagnosis like this can cause. I hope my results and information can help someone. Stay bless everyone and thanks for your advice. It takes special people like you all to extend comfort to those in need of it. This misdiagnosis has definitely made me closer to God and I’m learning how to appreciate the little things in life 💗

Basically, the test results are fine. Remember, I'm not a doc, so you do need to pay attention to what your pulmonologist has to say, and I hope I'm not completely off base. It's not unusual for CT scans to show changes that could indicate mild emphysema. The PFT results make it clear that even if there is mild emphysema, it has had no effect on your breathing at this point. The only thing I saw that I would encourage you to follow-up on are the nodules. Nodules are pretty common and it's not anything you need to get excited about unless you have ones that grow....so that CT scan in a year is probably a good idea.

That said, regular exercise, making sure you're as close to your normal weight as possible and generally living a nice healthy life-style with no smoking (if you ever did) will do a lot to keep you right where you are should work. I'd also recommend that if you do get something respiratory, see your doc sooner than later. Any doc will tell you they'd rather see a well wimp in their office than a toughie in the ICU.
