Is Anyone Else A Retainer? And Does Anyone Have Massive Bloody Noses?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Agawam, MA

I do have a humidifier, one upstairs and one downstairs. I still have really bad nose bleeds. And with being a retainer even though my numbers are good, I’m not

The only thing plugged into the outlet is the concentrator. The other has my husbands cpap. Can’t unplug anything . I’m trying to get creative during the day and sleep sitting up.

Can I ask how you know you're a CO2 retainer and what treatment you're receiving for that? I ask, because all of us with with COPD can feel the effects of having more C02 in our systems than most people, especially when we exert ourselves. The result is that we get really short of breath and have to slow down or stop and recover. Pursed Lip Breathing is a great help in those situations, especially if you start doing it as soon as you start exerting yourself......it slows the process down and keeps you comfortable for longer. True C02 retainers retainers build up C02 all the time and are often prescribed non-invasive ventilation machines like a Bi-pap or a Trilogy that can be used at night, and in the case of the Trilogy, it's easy to use it during the day as well.

The nose bleeds are more common in the winter because the air is dryer, and even more common if you use 02. Continue to use your humidifiers for sure. Talk with your doc about anything you might be taking that is a blood thinner, such as baby aspirin or ibuprophen, because they can make nose bleeds more common.

Hi Diane. We actually learn more about our care when some of these topics go off-kilter, not just learning by our mistakes!
The truth of the matter is our medical condition is considered a Disability under Federal laws. This includes expecting adequate accomodations in Public spaces and both in the workplace or "Home". That includes rental living.

Not only is poor electrical service preventing you from using your medical equipment, but it can normally be considered a fire Hazzard too. My city really frowns 🤨 on that kinda stuff.
I'm not saying you should stir up a hornets nest while the weather is still poor, but the Season is soon to change. Your landlord needs to be more informed than just offering lame excuses. Your health matters even more than the rent money.

Talk with your pulmonologist or the doctor who prescribed the b-pap. Ask about the Trilogy and see if you can't exchange the bi-pap for the Trilogy. The problem is that if you keep blowing fuses using the bi-pap, the same thing will happen with the Trilogy. Fuses blow sometimes because you have too many things going to one fuse. You need to figure out where you have the fewest things plugged in and use that outlet. If the house is old, it will have fewer outlets than a newer home, so you're going to have to be creative. The other thing you can do is unplug some things going to one fuse and use that one.

It’s the whole house. My landlord would have to rewrite the entire house which he isn’t going to do. Do you need a script for a trilogy?
