Have Any Of You Been Prescribed A Bipap For Your COPD?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Huntsville, TX

I have been on a bipap for my copd for two years now. It helps me so much when I lay down at night and my machine helps me to breathe. My only complaint is I have a hard time with my mask leaking. I have tried several different mask and sizes. I have tried mask liners and cpap gel. I just wondered if anybody had any tips in solving the leak problem? I wonder what kind of mask they use at the hospital because the one they use does not leak when I am in the hospital or either I feel so bad I just… read more

@A MyCOPDTeam Member🙇🏼‍♀️🙌 I have been using a cpap machine for 20 years. I’ve had to change masks from time to time. This mask I have now I sometimes have to adjust the straps to make them just a little more snug. I have the cushion mask. I have an adapter on my CPAP for oxygen and what a difference it makes while I’m sleeping. Wake up with no headache.

ask your supplier if they have the same kind of mask as the hospital and could they supply those for you? I like the soft nasal canula and not the stiff ones but I had to ask to get them.

Both C-Pap and Bi-Pap machines are used to help people with sleep apnea continue to breathe by adding pressure for either the inhale (c-pap) or both inhale and exhale (bi-pap). Sleep apnea is often a condition found in people with COPD. Both machines use a mask to cover the nose and mouth and provide enough pressure to ensure that breathing continues with no breaks, thus allowing the individual to sleep soundly, ensuring a good rest. The bi-pap is often used for people who retain CO2, as the help with the exhale allows them to get rid of stale air.

There are many different masks for Bi-pap machines, probably hundreds. Try calling the hospital and talking with the people who keep track of the C-pap machines. They can tell you the manufacturer of the mask and you can see if your DME will get one for you.

I don’t really have the answer but I do know those c-paps are not the same in these hospitals. I didn’t qualify for one at home but the one I used at one hospital felt so good I asked for it every night I was there. At the other hospital it was so uncomfortable, I took it off. I would have gotten the name if I would have known. Sorry for taking it into another subject!🌺
