Have Questions And Want Ideas To Keep Working At My Job.
I work at a garden center. The soil seems to trigger my copd. I do not want to quit my job but I need ideas how to keep working. We wear masks but trying to breathe in masks can be
Difficult. Does anyone have masks with ventilation that they would recommend? I use my inhaler but does not seem to help me in the greenhouse.
While cautionary tales abound, and some are certainly true, you know the people you work with and how the company you work for has treated them in the past. If you haven't worked there very long, then ask some questions about how people have been treated when bad things happen to them. You can't always believe everything you hear, but you should get a sense of how the company operates. The other thing to think about is how you present your situation. If there are things you'd prefer not to do, think about how you could be accommodated easily and with no hassles. Someone who brings up a problem and presents a solution is usually listened to a lot more than someone who presents a problem and leaves it to the other guy to solve, so think about what you'd like as if you were the supervisor and try to anticipate questions and concerns. If you can enlist the help and support of other employees that can help, too.
Thanks @A MyCOPDTeam Member for your cautionary advice for JLK. I have seen a lot of experience-sharing to be overly "sanitized" in this Forum. But given the overwhelming nature of the COPD condition it doesn't hurt to put the "I am not A . _ _ _ _ (expert)" disclaimer in there. I always do that when I'm talking about Drag racing. It becomes YMMV - Your mileage may vary!
Of course @JIk should clearly check with her Doc on the dangers of working in the greenhouse environment. A friendly lawyer would advise of the proper timing to make an accomodations request (even if the workplace changes are "unreasonable"). Remember, We do not Work at our jobs in a vacuum. My co-workers were well aware of my illness long before the "Boss" found out. That first hospitalization for pneumonia just sealed the deal for a LT Disability claim. This was a burden on the employer too. But the real cost of COPD was my job. The rest is the rearview mirror.
But I am firm in one thing. The only rights you have are the ones you excercize. According to my lawyer, even in an At-will state you can not be fired for an ILLegal cause. That includes claiming your Disability.
The current (lack of) employment stability and so called "supply shortages" are all due to this - Misinformation. Well, also Covid - that's two. I am not a math scholar either. But the employer has always had the upper hand and this will only be strengthened by the vaccine mandates currently in play. Part of COPD Awareness includes searching for the right Knowledge in all aspects of medical, financial, legal, and social arenas which empowers US to better living.
