There is no way to compare the strength or efficacy of different meds by the prescribed dosage alone.
Your Doc likely selected the Levaquin based on her experience and infection trends in your community in recent weeks.
Though Levaquin is noted for respiratory and other systemic infections, it has many drawbacks. The chemical breakdown can be delayed by other common meds and lack of certain body minerals. It is often combined with other antibotics and used as a (next-to) last resort.
This is a good example of how docs try various antibiotics and not all antibiotics work for everything. Sometimes you just keep trying until you hit the one that will work. Notice how the dosage changed each time as well: 250 to 100 to 750. Even though the numbers don't indicate it completely, each dosage was more med than the last one.
Leave it up to the pulmonary doctor
I can only speak for myself but I've just recently had a bout with a very bad sickness and yet stayed out of the hospital. I had to go to the ER first and they put me on low dose Z-pack. No good. But made an appointment with my pulmonary doctor ASAP. Then a week goes by, no treatment, just what seems deathly ill. Go to pulmonary and see his ARNP so she puts me on doxycycline 100. Still no good. So I call dooc again and get appointment with him actually. He put me on Levaquin 750! Knocked it right out! This all took a total of about 2 1/2 months and the whole time I was on prednisone and I still am on the prednisone. That's how recent it has been!
