I Have Gerd And Reflux As Well As COPD

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Las Vegas, NV

I have had aspirated pneumonia several times . I wake up coughing and a sore throat from aspirating reflux..
While sleeping I slide down off the elevated head of the bed and end up with reflux.
Any one have any suggestions on how to stop sliding down ? I tried raising the foot of the bed too but end up in a depression in the bed I slide down in to. With both ends of the bed elevated it causes a depression .
My husband said he will Velcro me to the head board .LOL

I have been a senior caregiver(hospice worker) for many years. What I did for people who slid down in the bed is put about a 2 inch thick layer of towels, or a rolled bed pad or something right after the spot where their rear end is....it makes it harder for the rear to slide down if it has to go over a bump.

Antire flux surgery is the surgery for gerd. Very minor surgery and proven very very effective. God Bless and good luck. It is worth the conversation with your dr. Just think...sweet sweet sleep.

@A MyCOPDTeam Member I have GERD too which has caused me to develop asthma.
I have a similar problem, I have found keeping the elevation at 8 inches helps. I also keep a pillow under my shoulders and one for my head above it. So far it is the only thing that works for me.
My GI specialist recommended the following
1) I learn to sleep on my left side, there is less likelihood of aspirating in that position.
2) Sit up for at least 3 hours after eating.
3) Avoid tomatoes, coffee, tea, meat, fatty/fried foods.
These tips have reduced my reflux. I also have a medication Sucralfate (huge pills, but it helps) which I take before going to sleep to help reduce any chance of reflux.
Sorry for the long reply. Hope you can find things that work for you.
Take care
