Doctor Is Querying Emphysema Changes In Lungs

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Ok so, I was in hospital over the weekend following chest pains. I am already currently awaiting a 24 hour ecg, but an ecg, x Ray and blood tests were done, all of which were “fine” however my d-dimer levels were high. Because of the elevated levels a ct scan was booked in as the doctors were querying a pulmonary embolism, after the ct scan the doctor came to see me and said there was no embolism and I was free to go home but because of my shortness of breath she wanted to check my ct scan with… read more

Before they make a diagnosis based on a CT scan, you need to request a spirometry or Pulmonary Function Test. That's the definitive test for COPD. However, there are people who test normal on these tests and still have symptoms of COPD. That's when a CT scan is often helpful in diagnosis. Remember, I said that people still complain of symptoms of COPD. Chest pains are NOT symptoms of COPD. Shortness of breath is a symptom of COPD, but also a symptom of a number of heart related issues, which do cause chest pain.

The other thing to ask for is an Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency test. It's a simple blood stick. It's for an inherited, genetic form of emphysema, and at your age that's one of the first things they should do. I recommend that you go to both these web-sites for more information: www.copdfoundation.org and www.alpha-1.org Both sites will have lots of information that's factual and helpful. If you have either condition, you need to learn a lot and learn it quickly so you can go through the rest of your life managing and controlling a chronic condition.

dear @A MyCOPDTeam Member, due to your age this is very unlikely to be anything serious. im guessing a panic attack of some sort.Pain isnt exactly a symptom more if you were really breathless with really bad tightness right around your midriff...destress and unwind and im sure you will feel better...xxx
