My Husband Has COPD

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Scunthorpe, UK

My husband was diagnosed with COPD about 5 months ago,I had been asking him to go to the Dr for years but wouldn't go.Since he has been diagnosed he seems to have got worst he is always tierd and can't walk far, he has just about stopped smoking but he still feels really ill a lot, he said he hasn't been told what stage he is at, will this be true, he doesn't like anyone knowing that he is ill.

Chances are quite good that his friends already know that he's not well because they've seen the decline in his activities, and might be glad to have an explanation of what is going on with him. Just something for him to think about.

You don't talk about any medications, so I have to ask who diagnosed him? Your GP or a pulmonologist? My guess is your GP, and I strongly urge you to get him to a pulmonologist for a complete diagnostic and treatment evaluation. You husband need medications and a treatment plan, and it doesn't sound as though he has either. You also need to understand as much as possible about COPD, otherwise you'll be very little help to your husband. Go to www.copdfoundation.org and go to the learn more tab on the front page. You'll find a lot of information there that will help both of you.

Jean is right. Its the pulmonologist you need.I went through 5 of them to find the one that has kept me out of the hosp. & without pneaumonia & breathing attacks including strokes & heart attacks. My Trelogy mach & med. took years of all the other treatments,(neublizers, resucue inhalers, Adviar, steroids, oxygen & many others.) Now I only use the Trelogy & feel like living again.Remaining uninformed will only hurt you as this is a progressive disease. Best of luck & good research!

I was diagnosed about 5 yrs ago But this year I have gotten worse. I was hit hard at the end of May and was hospitalized for a couple of days and have been out of work since on short term disability and not able to go back to work yet. But I know how he feel I was very tired and all I wanted to do is sleep . And having rapied weight loss which is cause by the COPD. I have loss a total of 80 pounds in a year with 20 pound of that since June. I am eating but not keeping the weight on. So they put me on protein drink to hope stabilize me which put 1 pound back on me in a month. I also can't walk far now. If I go out I have to carry my oxygen with me.
This disease is hard to except especially when you were so use to doing alot. You have to learn to pase yourself and not to over do it.
Tell your husband we are all here to help him get though it and also here for you.

Hi @A MyCOPDTeam Member, when you say your husband was diagnosed was it his g.p. or hospital consultant? whoever it was should have very leased prescribed inhalers of some sort, these will definitely help with his breathing. He also has to stay active, just around the garden...x

Sorry to hear about your husband, but I'm sure that anyone on this site ever wanted to get COPD. I for one was told about it a long time ago and never wanted to hear it and didn't change anything in my life then one I was driving across the country and started cough and couldn't stop. I had to pull off the highway to catch my breathe. That was the day I quit smoking. Right there. I thought I will be all better now. Mind you, that I was told that I was on my way to get this disease years before, but I knew better. I didn't. I don't like carrying my portable o2 with me, but I do like to walk farther and not have my chest hurt. I have found that if you want, you can do almost anything you want. You have to pace yourself and know when to stop and take a break. This site has given me a lot of moral support and there are many very smart people in here. I think everyone reads and studies the new latest and greatest developments. Ask questions and share it might help us all. When you have a bad day you can vent to someone that understands, because they have been in the same spot yesterday, last week or last month and they will comfort you because they care. Sorry for rambling and I hope it makes some sense to you. Hang in there and know he is not alone. Breathe easy.
