I Had Diphtheria When I Was About Two Years Old And Had A Tracheostomy , I Spent Six Months In The Hospital .

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Hull, UK

Would it have been a stoma that I had fitted? My mother described watching me from behind a window in the room door and the nurse sitting on a chair with lots of cotton wool balls wiping my throat every time (rubbish?) popped out of the hole and dropping the used ball into a bucket. It was during the war.

I'm sure it was. The same procedure is used today in Trans-Tracheal Ostomy surgery to fit an O2 tube into the stoma as another way for people to get O2. The TTO procedure isn't very popular nor done very often, but people who have had it done swear by it because they used about half the O2 they would need otherwise.

Thank you, very interesting, I had to have one on one nursing because of the danger of most babies at that time having a very small chance of survival. I suppose that distance that my mother was away from me (because of the no visitors rule) she must have thought that there was just a hole there. It was just that I read something from one of our group that they had one fitted after a tracheostomy that I would ask. What about that, 75 years ago and just learnt something new ? 😊.
