Chest Congestion

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I had my flu and pneumonia shots on the 10th of October and of course last week I came down with a bad head and chest cold. Tried Mucinex but that seems to make my chest feel tighter and cough more with no mucus coming up. I have chronic bronchitis and now with this head and chest cold it feels so tight in my upper tube area close to where throat and chest meet. I keep using my albuterol/ipratropium broide in my nebulizer but even using that makes me cough a lot like it's dry air hitting it… read more

Having a "bug" is definitely going to make your O2 levels drop. You're having an exacerbation and you need to get treatment ASAP. If you don't go to the ER tonight, be sure to see your doc tomorrow. You probably need an antibiotic and prednisone to help you get over this and you may need supplementary O2 for a while as well.

This is a perfect example of why you need to have an action plan you've worked out with your doc. You need to figure out what the red flags are, and agree on what you're going to do as soon as one of those red flags shows up. My action plan includes me having antibiotics and prednisone on hand for situations just like this. When I know I have an infection (and we've agreed on what those signs are), I start taking an antibiotic and let my pulmo know. He calls me back and lets me know what else he wants me to do given the symptoms I've already given him. I've been doing this for years and I haven't been hospitalized for COPD since 2003.

It is not Walgreens. Rand of muconex I do not believe. It is bought at Walgreens and it is mucus relief not muconex which I believe is different it has a different ingredient. I will double check. I just know muconex and cough extended release I do not do well

I totally agree with everything Jean said above. I just got out of the hospital a few weeks ago because my levels dropped to 87 and I couldn't get them up. She's right. It's an exacerbation and needs immediate attention. Please do tend to it.......

@A MyCOPDTeam Member....The one suggestion I would make is about your levels dropping to 88 or less. When that happens to me my doctor usually puts me in the hospital because he says its an exacerbation. Some people call it a flareup. I usually have an infection which is why the levels dropped and the hospital had to bring me back up to par with some steroids and other meds. To be on the safe side, check with the doctor the next time. It can't hurt. Hey, we're all in this together and need to pass things on. I hope you're well now and that you have a good breathing day....
