I Am Looking For Information About Lung Transplants Please
I wondered if anyone can tell me about lung transplants. I heard they are only effective for 5 years and you would most likely develop cancer. I am not a candidate for volume reduction surgery because of the way my lungs exchange oxygen into my blood stream, or something like that. Does insurance typically pay for transplants? I have had severe asthma all my life so I actually have never had healthy lungs.
I had stage 4 emphysema and had a double lung transplant 6 months ago. I'm doing great and breathing again without oxygen. My doctors told me that the 5 year thing was true 10 years ago, but recent advances in techniques and medication have changed that. They couldn't give me a new number because many patients are still alive. All I know is I had no future, today I do. Even if it is 5 years, I would do it again. My quality of life was nil. Today its much much better. if you would like to talk about it, feel free to message me.
I am presently on the active list for a TX. As @A MyCOPDTeam Member stated above, my quality of life is declining rapidly now and this seems to be best for me. After extensive evaluations, I was accepted into the program in October. I'd be glad to answer any questions about the evaluations and discuss the anxiety involved in "waiting".
Remember that five year figure is an average, and includes people who didn't survive the operation as well as those who've lived for over 20 years. I hve a number of friends who've had the TX done and who've survived quite well. I have other friends who didn't do as well, but who still survived and whose quality of life was significantly improved after the surgery. Generally you trade one set of problems for another set of problems, so it's a choice that takes a lot of knowledge and consideration. As for developing cancer, I think that's an urban legend.
My advice is to get evaluated for the procedure. You'll learn a whole lot more about the possibilities and you'll have good information on which to base a decision. You may find that you're way too well to be considered, or that you're a really good candidate. You won't know until you go through the testing process.
I had a lung transplant 10 yrs. ago wasn't that successfull for me but I am still here.I had no other way I was dying now I'm looking at the left one big operation.
I agree...it is something one needs to really really think about and weigh up the pros and cons...If possible try and read other's transplant journeys to get an idea what it all involves.....Then make your decision....
Although I was told day 1 of my advanced diagnoses that i would not survive for many reasons...When i realised that there was no other procedure available currently that would suit my lung condition, I am quite happy to live with the devil I know than the one I don't.....
So wish you all the best.....xxxx
