This is very difficult to do but you need to start doing it immediately so it starts to become second nature to you. You can't breathe in. You start to panic. The problem gets worse. Sit down. Stay calm. Breathe in thru your nose as much as possible. Stay calm. Don't talk, do nothing else. Breathe out as much as you can thru pursed lips. Stay calm. Don't talk. Breathe in as much as you can thru your nose. Breathe out more than you breathed in thru pursed lips. In thru nose, out thru pursed lips more than you breathed in. Repeat until you can breathe normally again. If I'm in a room with other people trying to carry on a conversation, I will hold up my hands and shake my head trying to stay stop. Then I go thru what I just said, they have always been very kind and waited patiently until I could explain myself. I've learned to control my emotions, not to let things upset me so much, let most things just roll off my back. If people start giving me a hard time over the phone I just tell them, I'm disabled. I can't talk about this right now. It upsets me too much and if I get too upset I will lose my breath. Usually does the trick and if it doesn't I simply hang up on them. LOL.

I do that when i am out and about and when i feel myself working myself where i need to sit down and gather myself, even with oxygen i still get over whelmed when i am out and about...remember that the bigger the muscles being used (legs and arms) the more oxygen is being used, so we are at a loss in the battle for good oxygen...so remember SLOW MOTION IS BETTER THAN NO MOTION,, have a great day, hope this helped out a little..

Try breathing in through your diaphragm - put your hand on your belly below your navel and make it go out and go in with inhaling and exhaling, hopes this helps

@A MyCOPDTeam Member, one of the things I read which helped me a lot all the many times I quit was when you get the urge, "I need a cigarette" urge, go do something, distract yourself, clean your bathroom, do your dishes clean your stove, vacuum, play a game on the computer, something, anything, just to get your mind off it. The urge goes away in about 3 minutes, whether you have a cigarette or not. Gradually the urges become less and less until one day you will find you went a whole day without a cigarette. Then work on the next day. One day at a time. Don't think about next week or next month, just this day. You CAN do it.

I went into the hospital for something, I think it was a kidney stone that they couldn't blast. They had to go in with a lazer and break it up to remove it. anyway, they couldn't get my O2 up to 90% so they wouldn't send me home! They put me on O2 finally and did some tests and discovered that I had COPD and would be on O2 for the rest of my life. I had also smoked for 45 years and when they gave me three options: 1. continue smoking and die early or 2. quit smoking and live somewhat longer, I chose the later. The last cigarette I had was the last one I had before I went in the hospital! It was not easy but I did it and so can you. Just know that you will still want to have that cigarette for a long time after you quit, but don't give in to the craving. Hang tough and you will sucsede.......
