Sores Inside Nose

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Lumberton, TX

I've had a sore inside my nose since I got out of the hospital 3 weeks ago. They tell me not to use anything oil based. The only thing I've been told I can use is k-y jelly . So far it has not done anything to better it. My cannula rubs against it sometimes, when I blow my nose it knocks the bloody black scab off and bleeds for a while. Has this happened to anyone else ? If so, what did you use to get rid of it?

@A MyCOPDTeam Member I get this now and then. I use Vaseline but had to get it corterized finally. Still happens sometimes. When I had mine I cut some off of the tubes going into my nose so they would not rub. Also if you use O2 you might want to hook up to a water strainer or filter ,(what ever they call it)to add some moisture to your air. Hope this helps. Peace,Love, and Grace my friend.

I was just talking about that today with a nurse. A friend who is staying with me for a while to recover from an illness is on oxygen he explained to the nurse that the inside of his nose is sore from the oxygen tube so he put some vaseline in there. The nurse reaction so one should NEVER use vaseline in the nose while your on oxygen, The oxygen can burn inside your nose because of the petroleum jelly. She suggested a lubricant

There is a product out there called Ayr that is made to help. I also use a saline nose spray. If you continue to have problems ask your doc. Do you have a water bottle on your machine, if not have your O2 person bring one and use only distilled water in it.

try using medi swabs they are like methylated spirits so will sting like hell but will dry the sore out real quick so it can heal

Don't know on the coconut oil but my nose did that at first and the humidification really helped plus the saline spray, I used the Ayr until it healed but did not like the stickiness of it so the saline is much more comfortable and you can use it as often as you like. You need to try different cannulas too until you find one that fits more comfortably. I let mine hang loosely without cinching it up under my chin as every movement seems to pull on it an then it chafes your nostrils.I have gotten good about keeping it on at night too without strangling myself! I also bought some of the west med soft plus cannulas #0556 through amazon. Your provider may carry a soft type also. They are very comfortable and if the nasal prongs are too long and poke inside of your nose, trim them. Change your cannula every two weeks and if they are not bringing you enough, call them up and make them get some to you. I have been on O2 24/7 now since 2012 and never had a sore nose after the first couple weeks home from the hospital. The petroleum based products will sometimes soften an deteriorate the cannula material and that is why you should not use vicks or petroleum jelly, etc.
