Short Of Breath

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭
Loretto, TN

My breathing has got a lot worse in the last month. The doctor ordered a CT scan to see if I have fluid building up in my lungs.
What does fluid build up in the lungs mean?

You could have fluid in the lungs, which basically is pneumonia, or you could have what Gregg describes, which is fluid around the lungs in the lung cavity. That called a pleural effusion, and the fix is just what he described. If they catch it right away, it is an easy fix; if they don't, it's pretty uncomfortable.

Eva, fluid collection does often accompany COPD, but it shouldn't be considered "just part of the disease". It needs to be checked out because there are many, many reasons for fluid to collect and COPD is only one possibility.
