Inhalers For COPD And UTI Infections?

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Mount Carmel, IL

I have COPD and also have lung cancer. The cancer tumor at this point in my treatment is considered stable. The inhalers that I use for my COPD are Spiriva, Breo and albuterol in my nebulizer. Also have a Pro Air inhaler for emergency. I have been struggling with UTI infections off and on for almost two months. Supposedly UTI's can be a side effect of these inhalers. It. went away for about two weeks but now seems to be creeping back in to my life. Was wondering if anyone else has had to… read more

The inhalers that contain ipratropium such as Spiriva are the ones that could possibly cause UTI infections. Others that do not have this ingredient are most likely not the cause. However the Spiriva works for me much better than anything I have tried as far as my breathing is concerned.

I was back to the doctor today. I definitely have a yeast infection. Running cultures also and will have those results Monday which will verify if I still have a urinary tract infection. Yeast could be from the antibiotics as everything that fixes something seems to break something else, lol. Today I saw the Doctors assistant and she promised me that we would get this solved. She did tell me that not all inhalers cause this but Spiriva is one of the ones that could. She could see how much better I am breathing on the Spiriva and Breo and Albuterol and knows I do not want to give them up. She told me to quit worrying about it that they can give me maintenance treatment to conteract the bad effect of the spiriva. Assured me that it can all be controlled once they get me back to feeling my normal again. I know someone in comments above said that she takes a preventive antibiotic once a day that works for her so assume that is what my doctor is talking about. If you are having constant UTI's , ask your doctor. It may or may not be due to your inhalers. There are answers out there and maybe you can prevent some of the pain that comes with UTI's.
Stay positive everyone and keep fighting the good fight. Prayers and hugs to all that we breathe easier. Thanks for everyones' help.

Yes I get UTI's quite often. Have one now. I never realized it could be from inhalers. I was told if I change to Breo or Anoro not to use spiriva at all. He was very definite about that. So I now use Anoro and pulmacort but stopped Spiriva

Thanks for all the answers you guys. Patricia, glad to know that they have at least got control of it for you which means will be a solution for me also just have to find the right doctor. I have another friend that ended up at Mayo clinic for her chronic UTI's and they said it was Spriva. Makes me sad because my breathing is much much better with Spriva. I see my pulmonoligist next week, going to ask his opinion and may make an appt with an urologist. I am drinking water and cranapple juice , seems better today but just not going fully away. I seldom ever had them before but this one has been hanging around for a couple of months off and on. My internest gave me Ciprofloxacin and it disappeared for about two weeks and now is here again. Will keep looking for answers. Patti did you stop Spiriva???
