Has Anyone Here NOT Been Tested For Alpha-1?
I ask this question to save people from being misdiagnosed.
I am an Alpha-1, which is what they call us with this deficiency. Part of our job is to spread the word, so....YES get tested. Your COPD could be hereditary.
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is a genetic condition that can result in both liver and lung damage. The liver doesn't produce enough antitrypsin when you test positive for the deficiency. Lung damage is most common, but liver damage is also involved in some people. The lung damage is emphysema; caused by the deficiency and often aggravated by smoking or other lung irritants.
The test is a simple blood stick. Everyone who has been diagnosed with COPD should have this test, especially those who are younger. If you have both genes, the treatment is a protein infusion. The meds the rest of us take work with Alphas, but unless you have the infusion, the damage continues.
