How Much Prednisone Does Your Doctor Prescribe For A Flare Up?

My Doctor prescribes 40 mg. for five days. Is that what most people are prescribed?

That's a fairly typical dose. Another way it's often done is to start with three days at 40 mg, then 3 days at 30 mg, until you've had a total of 12 days. Some docs prefer to prescribe that way so you taper off, because prednisone over time can reduce or shut down the adrenals. They now believe that short doses, like the 40 mgs for 5 days example, don't affect the adrenals enough to worry.

Prednisone reduces the inflammation in the lungs (and anywhere else), so you generally feel great with the large doses. It's the side effects and the crash at the end that are hard to take. It's definitely the drug we love to hate!

I asked my gp: If Prednisone is what keeps me breathing then why not just stay on it? She said it is a form of chemo 😲
