My Pulmonologist Recently Put Me On Tobramycin Via Nebulizer Treatments Twice A Day.
After 10 days of being on this medicine, I have experienced several side effects. Mainly, a tight and heavy feeling in my chest, unable to take deep breaths (which is hard when taking my Trelegy or rescue inhaler), trouble sleeping and loss of appetite. I'm not on oxygen 24/7 normally, but now have had to start using it during the day when I'm up and moving around with my daily activities. Just wondering if anyone else is on this medication and are having any problems/side effects with it too?
I would contact my pulmonologist. Maybe your concern could be addressed. I would question any treatment that made my symptoms worse, but that’s just me. I know I had a violent reaction to saline via nebulizer. Luckily I was already in the hospital. No one seemed to know why, but my throat swelling and lungs refusing to take in air was enough to prove I couldn’t be on that treatment. So my rule of thumb is question-question-then reassess if YOU think it’s doing any good, then decide your comfort level. The one thing my pulmonologist always tells me is that he trusts I know my body better than him, and that being a patient gives me practical knowledge where his is learned by study. I love that guy!
@A MyCOPDTeam Member…..I didn’t mention I was on 6 cycles of Tobramycin last year for pseudomonas. I was prescribed it when I was in hospital very sick with the infection. All went well until my last round a yr ago last June. Got horrible chest tightness, oxygen sats OK but I still was extremely SOB. Woke up one morning with that and severe vertigo and “plugged ears”. Long story short, I developed toxicity. My kidneys and liver weren’t flushing it. The upside is it got rid of the pseudomonas with no recurrences. So by all means, be sure to check with your doctor before much time elapses. Toby is taken on precise schedules…stopping abruptly is not recommended.
no I don't
Calling your pulmo was the right call. Usually, this is prescribed only for pseudomonas. Is your pulmo also an infectious disease specialist? If not, you might inquire about why this was prescribed and should you seek a second opinion. You would have two questions: first do you have pseudomonas and second why this prescription and not something else? And might the something else cause the same sort of side effects?
Called my pulmonologist yesterday and talked with her nurse. Explained my side effects to her. Advised me she would talk with my Dr and get back with me. Still waiting for that call back. In the meantime, I stopped taking the medicine yesterday. Already feeling and breathing better, and had a good night's sleep last night.
My Pulmonologist Has Just Put Me On A Regime Of 3 Medications To Be Administered Via Nebulizer. W
