Concerned About Oximeter Readings

A MyCOPDTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do you check your oxygen and pulse rate with an oximeter daily? I do first thing after waking, and it’s usually 97–99 and pulse 65-75.
This week while checking it has been the same oxygen, but pulse rate has averaged 99-130, several times a day. I have a call in to my family Dr. but wondered if this ever happens to any of you. Do you check your oxygen? I was told to do this, and could take my oxygen off if it was at least 90, and if I was just going to be sitting, reading or watching tv.

Your heart rate will go up when you exert yourself; how high it goes depends on the activity. If you're moving really fast, or trying to lift something really heavy, it will go higher than it you're just going to the bathroom or the refrigerator. If you notice it going higher than normal when you're just sitting, keep track of how high it goes an d then talk with your doc about it. The doc will want to have at least a week's numbers. If you feel like i your heart is going too fast and you don't feel right, get to an ER ASAP.

Everyone who uses O2 for whatever reason, should have an oximeter and use it regularly to check their saturation levels at appropriate times during the day. Usually those time are when you're exerting yourself, exercising or doing something a little unusual and you're curious about how your O2 sats are doing. Adjusting your O2 according to what your sats say is always a good idea.

While I’m out walking I check my oxygen level and heart rate. Since surgery I have had better oxygen levels while walking. 90-94%. Heart rate is usually 80-126 or so. But goes back down quickly upon stopping. While sitting it is sometimes as low as 60-80. That’s my heart rate. Oxygen runs at
94-98 sitting with oxygen and with out it as well. Now while taking my trash to the curb my heart rate has been 129 but comes back down quickly. Oxygen is 90’s with oxygen. Without oxygen my oxygen level goes down quite a bit. Low 80’s so during exertion I always wear my oxygen. Always
Hope this helps

Yes I was told I could take my oxygen off if it stays around 92 and I've also had fast heart rates many times but was told it was because your heart has to work harder if you are not getting enough oxygen....
