Recently I went to the grocery store and it was all I could do to make it back to the car and use in hailer, my sister says I need to get a handicap thing to hang on my rear view mirror, so I can park closer...I always thought that was for people who have different types of handicaps, do I qualify for that?

If your doc signs the proper form, you can get a handicapped license or placard; at least that's how it's done in Iowa. Call you local driver's license facility; they'll know. You can also call the state DOT.

Do you have an exercise program and do you use supplemental O2? Do you know how low your O2 sats go when you walked back to the car and barely made it? Do you own an oximeter? These are things to discuss with your doc. If you don't use supplementary O2, tell your doc about what you experienced and have him or his staff walk you around the office for at least six minutes to see how much you desaturate. If you don't need supplementary O2, that's fine; if you do, use it! Talk with your doc about beginning a daily exercise program of at least 30 minutes of non-stop aerobic activity a day and three days a week 30 minutes weight training. You can do this at home, or he can give you a referral to a pulmonary rehab program or you can join a gym. The point is, get moving.

Get an oximeter so you can keep track of your O2 sats. Start exercising daily....start very, very slow and work your way up to 30 minutes of non-stop walking or whatever. Do 30 minutes with weights three times a week: 10 minutes each on upper, lower and core muscle groups. You'll find that if you're in better shape, walking out to your car at the grocery store isn't nearly the problem it was.

joan: you are handicapped, you can't make it that far. I have mine. Have doc write you for a handicapped sticker and send in to your LIcense bureau. You'lll have to double check that but the forms can be printed on line and 5 bucks good for 5 yearss. gl
